How To Paint Interior Projects

Millwork

Re-Paint My Millwork

Project Scenario

Cam wants to repaint all the doors and jambs in his house. What are his choices?

Preparation

  • A clean, contaminant-free, sound surface provides the right conditions for paints to adhere and last.
  • Scuff sand and clean areas to be painted with 120 grit sandpaper to dull existing finish and to prepare the existing surface to accept paint.
  • Important!  Rinse and let dry thoroughly, making sure all contaminants are removed from the surface.  Paint cannot adhere well to dust, dirt, oils, waxes and other residues.
  • Pet owners be aware that animal hair will require additional cleaning time and airborne contaminants will affect the finish appearance.
  • Patch with spackling or putty.
  • Caulk edges for uniform appearance.

Primer Coat

Best: 05130, Prime Solution 100% Acrylic Stain Blocking Primer

Top Coat

Best:  0311X, Renaissance Waterborne Alkyd "Semi-Gloss"
Better:  4405X, Super2 Semi-Gloss 100% Acrylic Latex "Semi-Gloss"
Good:  0112X, Premium Classic Latex "Semi-Gloss"

Caution! Things to consider

  • Clean working areas to improve the finished work.
  • Proper dry times are critical.
  • Spray application creates the smoothest finish, but creates a larger mess.
  • Brush and roll has a smaller impact on the work area, but the finish is not as blemish free as spray millwork.
  • Use an ammonia based cleaner to remove wax.
